John P. Bilezikian, M.D.
John P. Bilezikian, M.D., Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University is a specialist, researcher and international expert in the field of metabolic bone diseases. He is chief of the Division of Endocrinology and director of the Metabolic Bone Disease Program at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. He also serves as associate chair of the Department of Medicine.

Dr. Bilezikian is also associate director of the Partnership for Women's Health at Columbia. The Partnership is a ground-breaking effort to improve women's health through a better understanding of the physiological differences between women and men -- a new concept called gender-specific medicine. Dr. Bilezikian will be the lead investigator for several Partnership studies involving gender-specific medicine.

One of nation's leading authorities in endocrinology and metabolic bone diseases, Dr. Bilezikian is associate editor of both the Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism and Becker's Principles and Practice of Endocrinology and Metabolism. He is the editor-in-chief of The Parathyroids, which was published in 1994, and co-editor of Principles of Bone Biology, published in 1996. A member of numerous National Institutes of Health (NIH) panels, he served as chair of the consensus development panel on optimal calcium intake at the NIH in June, 1994. Dr. Bilezikian has authored more than 250 papers, books and chapters in medical literature.

He has served as president of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. Dr. Bilezikian also serves on the Central Committee of the International Congress of Endocrinology. He is an active member of many professional societies, including the Endocrine Society, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, the Association of American Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the Society for Clinical Densitometry.

Dr. Bilezikian received his undergraduate training at Harvard College and his medical training at the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed four years of house staff training, including the Chief Medical Residency of the Medical Service, at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Bilezikian received his training in metabolic bone diseases and endocrinology at the NIH, where he served as a clinical associate in the Mineral Metabolism Branch.
