Life after an osteoporotic fracture

Once we suffer a fracture, we're more likely to have another within the next year.

Here are important tips to follow if you have had an osteoporotic fracture:

Develop good posture with body alignment exercises. When you straighten your body alignment – head high, chin in, shoulders back, and stomach in – back pain is relieved, breathing improves, and you will achieve greater balance and be less likely to fall.

Get enough calcium and vitamin D by following the suggested amounts on page 5 of this newsletter.

Exercise no matter what stage of your osteoporosis. There are safe exercises starting at a low level that can help slow bone loss and build up specific bones. It is important to see an exercise specialist to learn the dos and don'ts of safe exercise.

Manage pain by discussing pain-management strategies with your doctor. Don't ignore chronic pain. Left untreated, it can limit your mobility and cause even more pain.

Learn about the new therapies that are being developed to halt bone loss and build bone mass. Discuss with your physician.

Prevent falls by wearing low-heeled shoes with non-slip soles. Check your house for electrical cords, throw rugs and slippery surfaces that can cause a fall. Beware of medications that can cause dizziness or loss of balance.*
