Dr. Legato receives a proclamation from NY City Councilman John Liu, for the Partnership for Gender-Specific Medicine

Honorary Chair Lee Grant joined Dr. Marianne Legato and the Partnership for Gender-Specific Medicine at Columbia University in a celebration of its 5th anniversary by honoring leaders from the media, public and private industry at the Partnerships Annual Gala and Athena Awards ceremony, held on May 8, 2002, at the Metropolitan Club in Manhattan.
Athena Awards were presented to Joyce Rudick, Director of Programs and Management for the Office of Research on Womens Health at the National Institutes of Health; Dr. Herbert Pardes, President and CEO of NewYork- Presbyterian Healthcare System; Helena Foulkes, Vice President of Marketing for CVS/pharmacy; Tricia McLeod Robin, President, and Marian Rees, Co-chair of the National Council for Families and Television. In addition, the Partnership an International Athena Award was presented to Mitsuko Shimomura, President and CEO of the Center for Health Care and Public Concern in Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Theresa Wizemann, Study Director of the Committee on Understanding the Biology of Sex and Gender Differences at the Institute of Medicine, received the Partnership Distinguished Scholar Award. The M. Irené Ferrer Award for Original Research in Gender-Specific Medicine, a grant of $60,000 supported by MultiMedia HealthCare/Freedom LLC, was presented to Dr. C. Subah Packer, Associate Professor of Physiology, Indiana University School of Medicine.

At the gala, Dr. Legato, founder and director of the Partnership, announced that the Partnership has officially become the Partnership for Gender-Specfic Medicine at Columbia University, reflecting its commitment to improving the health of both women and men.
Proceeds from the event support the M. Irené Ferrer Professorship in Gender-Specific Medicine at Columbia University. M. Irené Ferrer is an internationally known physician whose work integrated outstanding research, patient care, and educational achievements in training whole generations of cardiologists. The professorship will honor Dr. Ferrers important contributions to medicine.
